MY STORY

From Limitation to Leadership

I was born in a small village where most people did not speak English and rarely traveled beyond the community. The world felt small, and the expectations for what life could become were even smaller. Growing up as one of six siblings in an environment where opportunities seems limited and expectations were often small, I often heard words that many people carry with them for a lifetime. “You will never succeed.” For some people, words like that become a life sentence. For me, they became a challenge. Everything changed when I was ten years old. That day, I had the opportunity to fly in a small airplane. As the aircraft lifted off the ground, something inside me awakened. Looking out the window at the world below, I made a decision that would shape the course of my life. One day, I would become a pilot. At seventeen, I began flying lessons and earned my private pilot license. I later enrolled in college to pursue my commercial pilot license. But the road forward was not easy. As a Francophone with very limited English, my progress slowed, and I found myself working as a clerk in a parts department while continuing to pursue my dream. Still, I refused to give up. Eventually, an opportunity appeared through the Canadian Forces, which offered secondlanguage training. What was meant to be a one-year enrollment turned into 28 years of service. During my time in the Air Force, I flew missions across multiple countries, including operations in war zones. These experiences taught me lessons that few environments can teach—discipline, resilience, leadership under pressure, and the importance of clarity in moments when everything is uncertain. Later in my career, I was selected to teach at the Air Force Leadership Academy. For five years, I trained military students in leadership, counseling, coaching, and mentoring as they prepared to lead others in complex and demanding situations. Beyond my military career, my entrepreneurial spirit led me to build several businesses, including a tanning salon, real estate investments, and two flying schools. Looking back, I realize that my life has been shaped by one powerful principle: The limitations placed on us are rarely the ones that truly define us. The real limits are the ones we accept. My journey taught me the importance of embracing who we truly are, challenging limiting beliefs, creating a clear direction, and moving forward with resilience and intention. A few years ago, I realized that everything I had experienced—every challenge, every lesson, every transformation—had prepared me for something greater. I discovered a calling to help others find what I had discovered for myself. Today, as a Life Coach, I help people who feel stuck rediscover who they truly are, break through the limitations that hold them back, and move forward with clarity, confidence, and purpose. Because the life you are capable of living is often far greater than the one you have been told is
possible.

I've only had two sessions with Gilles Mercier, but they left a lasting impression. There's a rare quality to the way he holds space — unhurried, genuinely present, and free of any need to impress. You sense immediately that his calm comes from experience. His background in leadership and high-stakes environments means he asks the kind of questions that cut through to what actually matters. I left each session feeling clearer, not because he told me what to think, but because he helped me hear myself more honestly. If you're looking for a coach who brings both depth and stillness to the work, I'd recommend Gilles without hesitation.
